Gull Lake, a water wonderland! Southwest Michigan is host to only a handful of large inland lakes and one of the most desirable is Gull Lake; sought after for its size, depth, water clarity, location, fishing, boating activities, diving and swimming activities and much, much more.

At 2,050 acres, Gull Lake is the second largest lake in Southwest Michigan. The average water depth of 70 feet and a maximum depth of 110 feet provide ideal opportunities for sport fishing and diving. Combine this with the shape of the lake, 4.5 miles long by 1 mile wide, and you get an ideal sailing lake.

Gull Lake

Whether vacationing or living year around on Gull Lake you will enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Much of the lakefront property is wooded, while the countryside is farmland or natural wetlands. Gull Lake was once primarily a resort destination. Many of the inns were accessible only by boat. As individuals built their own cottages, roads started to develop around the lake. Over time the lake has become more populated with full time residence as a commute to Kalamazoo or Battle Creek is less than 20 minutes.

sailing on gull lake

The Yacht Club has a strong history of sailing and competition on Gull Lake. During the summer months home owners frequently observe the spectacular views of the sails racing across the waters. The Yacht Club, which is part of the Gull Lake Country Club, hosts a variety of classes, competitions, and other events. The Gull Lake Country Club, located on the west shores of Gull Lake, offers members a full host of social activities including golf, racquet sports, beach, dining, yacht club, and private parties.

Richland, the nearby village, offers upscale restaurants such as Mission Pointe and Confection, unique shopping at Chaubrei Gardens and Blue Water Gallery, a day at the Greenery Spa and other personal services, as well as the local hardware store, a great grocery store and everything you need to get by. During the summer months you can enjoy local produce and products sold at the farmers market held the 1st Wednesday of the month at the Richland Community Center.

Popular festivals include the 4th of July Parade, an art fair held annually on the second Saturday in July, Richland Park Horse Trials and Richlandfest near the end of August, Spaghetti Dinner in October sponsored by the Rotary Club, and Wassailing held the first Thursday in December sponsored by RABA, to name a few.

On the west side of the lake you will find a nature lovers paradise. Enjoy walking the grounds or participating in an event at the W.K. Kellogg Manor House and
Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. The Tudor style architecture was originally built in 1925 on 32 acres of land along the shores of Gull Lake. The grounds also include a carriage house with chauffeur's residence, greenhouse and potting shed, a caretaker's cottage, boat house, Dutch windmill, and lakeside pagoda. After Mr. Kellogg's death in 1951 the estate was given to Michigan State University and became part of the Kellgg Biological Station. One of the region's largest biological research grounds covering over 4,000 acres including research facilities and farm.

gull lake nature

As the water fowl, fish, and wild game are important to the area so is maintaining the water level. The watershed is monitored and protected by the Four Township Water Resource Council and the Gull Lake Qualitly Organization. The four townships that make up Gull Lake include Prairieville and Barry Townships in Barry County and Richland and Ross Townships in Kalamazoo County. As a resident of these areas you are encouraged to practice conservation and you can learn more about how you can hep protect our lake. Through the efforts of The Gull Lake Quality Organiztion the water clarity and quality remain above average compared to other Michigan inland lakes.

In years past the National Geographic magazine stated that Gull Lake was one of the premier inland lakes in the region. Over the years, the residence and the whole community take pride in their 'Michigan Jewel' and you will not be dissappointed should you travel to our area. As such, the lakefront property values are prime, values start around $450,000 and exceed $3 Million. The so called 'tear down' cottages are near non-existant.

Before you buy or sell your home contact our office to work wtih a lakefront consultant to advise you on the value of your investment.
