Magnificent Gun Lake one of Michigan's premier waterfront destinations! Gun Lake is the largest southwest Michigan inland lake covering 2,680 acres of surface water, up to 66 feet deep, and an estimated 24 miles of shoreline including several islands. This fantastic lake is sought out for its location, size, fishing, and community features.
Gun Lake is located in Yankee Springs and Orangeville Townships in Barry County and in Wayland and Martin Townships in Allegan County. Closest large cities would include Grand Rapids to the North and Kalamazoo to the South, each about a half an hour drive. Local shopping, dining and conveniences can be found in Shelbyville, Middleville, Hastings, Plainwell or Wayland as well as many established businesses around the lake.
There are two large bodies of water, East and West Gun Lake, several islands such as Blackbird Island, Orangeville Island and Yankee Springs Island and several channels make up this extensive lake. West Gun Lake on average is 4 feet deep with Pickerel Cove reaching depths up to 25 feet deep. East Gun Lake provides depths up to 66 feet deep and 25 feet deep on average but look out for the northern portion called Duffey Point and Baird's Cove where it is only 5 feet deep. Boating activities abound on Gun Lake as the access points and recreational sites attract sportsmen and nature lovers alike. The northern portion of Gun Lake including the long peninsula called Murphy's Point is owned by the state. Yankee Springs Recreation Area and the Barry State Game Area together cover over 22,000 acres of wetlands and small lakes, wooded areas as well as overgrown fields. Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and much more can be enjoyed around the lake.
Local events during the summer months can be accessed by the 'Trolley by the Lake' sponsored by the Gun Lake Business Association. Scheduled events include an Art Hop and Orangeville Days in August and Winterfest in February. From dining to lodging to golf you are encouraged to visit the Gun Lake Tourism site to learn more about the area.
Most of its rambling shoreline is graced with sandy beaches and the lake bottom is largely sand. Because of its beauty, its water clarity, and its location the demand for property located on its shoreline continues to be strong and values are ever escalating. Homes over the past several years have sold between $200,000 and $1million with our opinion of desirable lakefront and home features typically starting at $450,000.
